The Future of Kanaganeri  Lake

Both elders and children will tell stories that give the history of Kanaganeri Lake, and convey the importance of restoring this significant water body. There will be a walk along the perimeter of the lake, as well fishing, kolam-making, sketching, and other arts activities. This is a chance for people of all ages to creatively express their affection and concern for this urban jewel. The Honourable Lt. Governor, Dr. Kiran Bedi, will launch the event at 3:30 pm.

Anita Ratnam: Ma3Ka

Dr. Anita Ratnam presents her 2009 “neo-Bharatanatyam” piece, Ma3Ka. Using Vedic hymns, singing, silence, drumming, contemporary mythology, and a distinctive movement vocabulary, Ma3Ka is the performative expression of the Hindu goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Meenakshi.  Each of these divine matriarchs — representing knowledge, prosperity, and martial art — is refracted through the prism of Dr. Ratnam’s personal narratives.

Wetlands and Climate Change

Groves of Aiyaṉār / Les bosquets sacrés d’Aiyaṉār

In sacred groves at the edges of settlements, Aiyanar deploys his army of cows, horses, and elephants of terracotta. They stand in wait, ready for him to mount, so that he may chase away maleficent forces that threaten to disturb the serenity of sleeping villagers after dark. This photographic exhibition is a reflection of the fragile and eerie beauty of such shrines, ancient and modern, that are spread across the length and breadth of the Tamil-speaking South.

Navarasa by Unmukta Sinha

An Odissi dance recital based on the nine aesthetic flavours or emotions of Indian Art. A rasa when translated literally means “juice, essence, or taste”. According to the Natya Shastra, entertainment is a desired effect of performance arts but not the primary goal. The primary goal is to transport the individual in the audience into another parallel reality, full of wonder and bliss, where he experiences the essence of his own consciousness, and reflects on spiritual and moral questions.

A Walk through Pondicherry’s Streetscapes

28 January, 4:00 pm, and 29 January – 1 February 2019, 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm  |  Ashram Exhibition Hall, 1 Rangapillai Street, Beach Road Entrance

If you have an eye for the special charms of Pondicherry’s architecture and streetscapes, then you should contribute your best photographs to this special exhibition.  Festival organizers will select one hundred of the photos submitted for public display in the Ashram Exhibition Hall; and a grand prize winner will be selected on the final day of the show.

Whether or not you contribute an image, be sure to attend the exhibition.

VILLAGE TOUR

Discover Bahour

The town of Bahour has played an important role in both the cultural and natural history of Pondicherry. It is home to the Chola-period Mulanathaswami Temple as well as Bahour Lake, one of region’s most important water-bodies and a significant habitat for migratory birds. Join us for this guided tour.

PHF will be organizing transport from Seagull Restaurant (near the port) to Bahour, departing promptly at 2:45 pm. The cost is Rs. 150 and the deadline for registration is 23 January.

ACADEMIC COMPETITION

Pondicherry Heritage Quiz

23 January 2019, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm  |  Alliance française de Pondichéry, 58 Rue Suffren | PRE-REGISTRATION IS MANDATORY

This annual inter-school competition pits teams from around Pondicherry in a test of their knowledge of the local heritage — natural, cultural, architectural, and spiritual. The quiz will be given in both English and Tamil, and each school can register in both junior (6th – 8th standard) and senior (9th – 12th standard) divisions. THIS EVENT IS NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Creative Expression for Heritage Preservation

The subject is Pondicherry heritage, in all its dimensions. There will be activities in each the following disciplines:

  • Individual Dance – Classical or Folk
  • Group Dance – Contemporary

These creative activities are open to all students, regardless of ability. Prizes will be award to outstanding participants in each discipline. The public is welcome to attend.
